Alexander II. – “the Liberator” (* 1818; † 1881) From 1855 to 1881, Alexander II., the son of Nicholas I., was Emperor of Russia. He agreed to the Peace of Paris in 1856, ending the Crimean War. The abolition of serfdom earned him the name “Liberator” – Zar. In 1877, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire due to the Bulgarian April Uprising. He initiated numerous reforms but also had opponents of his regime monitored and persecuted. That’s why he eventually died in a bomb attack.
