Description
Catherine I. Alexejewna (* 1684; † 1727) was the second wife of Peter the Great. Coming from a very humble background, she first won the Zar’s affection and respect as his companion for many years. The union produced, among others, the later Russian ruler Elizabeth Petrovna. Peter married Catherine in 1712, and in 1724 he appointed her co-regent. Her participation in several of her husband’s military campaigns was an important reason for this appointment. After Peter’s death in 1725, she was reigning empress of Russia for two years until her own demise, but during that time she left the exercise of rule de facto to Prince Alexander Menshikov.
