Description
Catherine II. – “the GREAT” (* 1729 as Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst; † 1796) was empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796 and wife of Peter III., whom she eventually had murdered in order to proclaim herself empress. Catherine II. is the only female ruler who has received the epithet “the GREAT” in historiography and was a representative of enlightened absolutism.
Her most important achievements were that she was successful in encouraging foreigners to settle in Russia and was able to expand Russia’s sphere of influence so that Russia had access to the Black Sea after two wars against the Turks. She also played a decisive role in the three partitions of Poland and waged a war against the Swedes in 1788.
