Nicholas II. (* 1868; † 1918) was the !LAST! Russian Zar from 1894 to 1917. The defeat in the war against Japan in 1905 – after the suppression of a peaceful demonstration on St. Petersburg’s Bloody Sunday – triggered the Russian Revolution of 1905. The Zar had to accept the formation of the Duma (Russian parliament).
From 1914 to 1918, Russia fought in First World War. In 1917, Nicholas II. abdicated as a result of the February Revolution and was assassinated by the Bolsheviks in the summer of 1918, along with his entire family! Since 2000 he has been revered as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church.
