Description
Alexei Mikhailovich I. – “the most peaceful” (* 1629; † 1676) He ruled as Zar from 1645–1676 and was the son of Michael I. During his reign, peasants were severely oppressed. The additional high tax burden repeatedly led to uprisings from 1648 onwards. In 1649 serfdom was established by law. Alexei had been at war with Poland since 1654, which Sweden also joined in 1656 and fought against Russia. Only the Peace of Andrussovo in 1667 ended the hostilities and Smolensk, Kiev and eastern Ukraine became part of Russia.
