Ivan (Ioann) III. Vassilyevich (* 1440; † 1505), called “Ivan the GREAT”, was Grand Duke of Moscow from 1462 to 1505. He was the FIRST to use the title of “Zar of Russia”! During his reign by acquisitions and conquests, a unified Russian Empire emerged, which was able to shake off centuries of Mongol rule and rose to become the great Eastern European power. In addition to legislative and military reforms, he created new ideological foundations for the state. Ivan III.’s reign saw the construction of today’s Moscow Kremlin and its most important sacred buildings.
